Agencies talk about oil and gas production around Chaco Canyon

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The U.S. Department of the Interior is considering revoking permits for oil and gas production on federal lands around Chaco Canyon. However, it may not have the desired impact.

A Bureau of Land Management report estimates that the effect on oil and gas production would be negligible.

He said only about 100 new oil and gas wells would be drilled in the region to begin with and the pullout would cut that number in half.

Environmentalists said the agency needs to look more broadly at the effects of development in this area on the cultural site.
