The BJP government at the Center has turned investigative agencies into instruments of “political revenge” over the past eight years, RJD leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said on Wednesday. He said the RJD had nothing against CBI officers but opposed the use of the CBI as a political tool.

“Over the past eight years, the central government has turned investigative agencies into instruments of political revenge. Locals never used to raise questions about the integrity and working style of these agencies. Our opposition to the CBI is no longer against the institution but against its politically motivated mode of operation,” he said.

He said investigative agencies were trying to please their “political masters” by raiding opposition leaders. These agencies have never raided BJP MPs or MPs. “That’s why we oppose their political nature,” he said.

Yadav said several opposition leaders, who faced corruption charges, were given blank certificates after joining the BJP. “Some became ministers, others became chief ministers,” he said.

“We have never been against and will never be against the agents of these agencies. We know they’re just following orders. But we are against the use of the CBI as a political instrument,” he said in a series of posts on Twitter.

Manoj Kumar Jha, senior RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP, said Yadav made a distinction between CBI officers and BJP structure.

“The new institutional character of the CBI is questionable. For example, it was planted by CBI sources that a mall in Gurugram belonged to Tejashwi Yadav. Now the owners have said Tejashwi Yadav had nothing to do with it. There should have been some clarification, a statement from the CBI. I’m not saying they should have apologized. This is why we say that the institutional character of the CBI threatens the very idea of democracy and the rule of law,” he said.
