Parsippany, New Jersey, United States, December 20, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Wireless Telecom Group, Inc. (US NYSE: WTT) announced that his CommAgility brand is part of a consortium receiving funding from the UK government to develop 5G infrastructure for an Open RAN project. CommAgility is part of the 5G DU-Volution project, which will evolve Distributed Unit (DU) devices to meet emerging industry requirements including reduced power, smaller footprint, improved spectral efficiency, and lower latency. CommAgility was chosen for the project because of its capabilities in 5G PHY and stack hardware and software, and it will bring its extensive portfolio of 5G baseband processing software and expertise to enable DU development.
The 5G DU-Volution project aims to integrate products into a DU component ready to be deployed in 5G networks. The consortium is led by ADVA Optical Networking. Along with CommAgility, other partners are AccelerComm, British Telecom, University of York and Scotland5GCentre. The consortium partners received funding as one of the UK‘s Future Radio Access Network Competition (FRANC) winning teams.
The British government has recently announced a common ambition, with mobile network operators, that 35% of UK mobile network traffic be carried on open and interoperable RAN architectures by 2030. Open RAN (O-RAN) divides the necessary equipment to the Radio Access Network (RAN) in several components, including the DU. This undertakes much of the signal processing to convert radio signals into data that can be transported over optical and wired networks to the core network.
