Former governor Dariye instructs security agencies to tackle insecurity in Bokkos

Worried about the recent attacks in the local government area of Bokkos in Plateau state, the state’s former governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, has urged security agencies to deal with bandits and gunmen terrorizing outright the region to stem the tide of murders and destruction of farms.

The gunmen in large numbers last week invaded nearly ten local government communities and killed community leaders and others, while burning down several houses.

Senator Dariye, who was on a sympathy visit to the affected communities and villages on Thursday, strongly condemned the attacks, adding that it was quite unfortunate that such a heinous crime against humanity could continue without anyone being apprehended. .

The former governor, while speaking with reporters after the sympathy visits to Bokkos, was appalled at the level of destruction by the gunmen and implored security agencies to draw a battle line against unwanted elements to prevent future events.

His words: “The situation requires urgent attention. It can only be handled by security agencies in conjunction with the government. They must not allow the situation to escalate to the level of self-help on the part of people.

He further called on traditional leaders and other stakeholders within the council area to be on the lookout for any suspicious movement and report it to the government and security agencies for prompt action, adding that he is wrong to wait for the criminals to strike before contacting the security agencies.

According to him, a situation where the natives and the Fulani herders are still at odds over the destruction of farms as a result of the encroachment of cows on their farms and the natives taking the law into their own hands should not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“It is necessary that all embrace peace and avoid acts of provocation which could lead to the breakdown of law and order. “Community leaders as well as traditional leaders have a big role to play in this,” he said.

He therefore warned against retaliation in any form and urged people to put the past behind them and cooperate with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The former governor, who traveled by motorbike to some of the affected communities, held peace meetings with the people and also attended the stakeholders’ meeting held at the local government headquarters in Bokkos.
