According to Fine Gael Kildare South TD and Minister of State Martin Heydon, the new government funding to support Kildare’s post office network is welcome and will bring certainty to many local postmasters considering their future.

Minister Heydon said his colleague, Minister of State for Postal Affairs, Hildegarde Naughton, briefed him on a new government funding package of €30m to be provided over a fixed period of three years, to support a sustainable national post. Office network.

He added that Minister Naughton visited Kildare last week and took her to meet Fintan Darling, postmaster at Curragh Camp post office, who told him of the postmasters’ concerns local.

“Fine Gael works to build stronger and safer communities and our local post offices play a vital role in community life. We recognize the importance of a high-value, high-quality network of post offices to citizens across the country, and the central and trusted role of postmasters in our communities, particularly in the regions more isolated and rural,” said Minister Heydon.

“This funding announcement marks the first time in government history that direct financial support will be provided to postmasters. This will provide them with certainty and stability, allowing them to plan and develop their services. The government is encouraging the postal network to offer an increased range of community banking and e-commerce services to the public and businesses.

The Kildare politician noted that a report from the inter-ministerial group, which was set up to look at the feasibility of additional government services provided through An Post and the postal network, will be published shortly.

“The funding will also help protect the future of the most vulnerable post offices in our communities which I know will be welcome in Kildare and across the country. We have really seen the benefit of our post offices and postmasters during the recent Covid period when they were a real lifeline for many people in rural areas,” he said.

“It is so important that people have access to the quality services offered by the postal network, whether they live in urban or rural Ireland. This funding will help ensure this access for everyone, wherever they live in County Kildare.
