Pune City Commissioner Vikram Kumar decided on Thursday to keep in place the concession that was offered to government agencies to dig and repair roads under the trench policy. Previously, the city administration of Pune wanted to abolish the concession and levy charges equal to those of other private agencies.

Charges are around 6,000 rupees per running meter for government agencies. Government agencies enjoy a 50% discount on digging fees compared to a private entity.

Government agencies such as Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and other agencies have to dig the roads of the city to lay their cables and gas pipelines. The PMC is currently granting them a concession for the excavation work.

The elected officials and the municipal administration wanted to collect heavy charges from these agencies because the roads of the PMC are regularly damaged.

City Commissioner Vikram Kumar said, “I have decided to maintain the existing charges for government agencies and they have to pay the same. PMC has decided not to apply fees equivalent to those of private agencies.
