This is based on the government’s Automotive Development Program in Ghana which would grant such companies tax relief for up to 10 years.
A brand manager at Silver Star Auto, Delali Greenstock, whose team works with French car giant Peugeot, to assemble their cars in Ghana, is confident they would be able to post lower prices once the program fully implemented.
“In the very near future, we expect prices to really come down because we expect the government to provide all the incentives and tax exemptions that have been promised. Once done, the vehicles will be much more affordable.
Commenting on the quality issues, Silver Star Auto’s marketing director Albert Eshun pointed out that the locally manufactured cars were assembled in strict accordance with international best practices.
“Those produced in Ghana are of the same quality as those from Europe and other parts of the world, but the prices are going to be much more attractive.”
Already, the government as part of measures to ensure that vehicles are sold at competitive prices has decided to zero-rate the sale of these vehicles for a period of eighteen months.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta previously reported that the Ghana Automotive Development Program under the Strategic Anchor Industries Initiative continued to attract investment.
“In April 2022, Nissan commissioned the largest automobile assembly plant in Ghana (in Tema), with the capacity to assemble over 31,000 vehicles per year. The planned commissioning of four (4) additional factories this year, bringing the total to nine (9) global brands, will make this country a real automotive hub in the sub-region,” he said. added.
