Why migrating to the cloud is good for government agencies


For the past few years in enterprise computing, the struggle between on-premises software and cloud services has dominated technical conversations. Today, many companies realize that we will never return to the office routine we knew before the pandemic. As remote and hybrid work becomes the norm, voters now expect to be communicated through different channels, including mobile.

The introduction of mobile-first operations highlights the need to improve the technology system within the public sector.

Mobile-centric processes help public servants improve their internal communications and increase their efficiency and productivity. At the same time, these mobile technologies significantly improve public services for citizens.

The cloud has delivered business value for nearly 20 years. When the cloud first launched, it terrified many, as concerns arose about data privacy and potential security threats. However, cloud services offer just the opposite. Overall, the public cloud offers better security and improved services and provides more flexible cost models than on-premises data centers.

Let’s discuss some of the reasons why on-premises solutions are no longer beneficial for government employees.

On-premises solutions consume resources

Implementing on-premises solutions can have a huge impact on budgets and take valuable expertise and resources away from other areas of government budgets.

Unlike on-premises infrastructures, migrating to the cloud does not require a large initial investment. In fact, a single cloud-enabled government technology service typically serves a variety of agencies and constituents. And with predictable storage and network capacities, it can have a huge impact on your budget cycles.

Additionally, managing more on-site infrastructure means technical teams will have to manage more people and power. And government agencies certainly don’t want to manage complex data centers.

Given government budget constraints, the cloud is a more reliable choice in the short and long term.

The cloud provides data security

For a government agency, security is a top priority. Reluctance to join the cloud is often due to fear that cloud tools are less secure. But this is a misconception. While governments fear the accessibility of data in the cloud, on-premises solutions actually increase security risks. The cloud is well equipped for cybersecurity and can reach levels unattainable by on-premises solutions.

Cloud providers continuously improve the highest levels of data protection and information security, with the benefit of backing up and restoring data to ensure business continuity and availability. Additionally, public cloud providers spend billions of dollars on security research, investment, and protection.

Cloud providers are willing to spend the majority of their budgets making security a priority. Shouldn’t all government agencies do the same?

On-premises solutions may not be compliant

CIOs often cite compliance as a barrier to cloud adoption. Cloud providers must comply with their country’s mandates, laws, and regulatory frameworks. For example, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) ensures that cloud providers meet strict requirements. Therefore, government agencies can be confident that their adopted cloud solutions are compliant.

As various industries adopt cloud solutions, it is crucial that government agencies are not left behind. After all, despite popular belief, the cloud offers a more affordable, secure, and compliant environment than traditional on-premises solutions.
